A serious X problem after Testing upgrade

I'm running Debian Testing and I did an update last Sunday. I think one,
or more, of the packages was X related. I really can't remember any
more than that.

I did not reboot at that time.

One of the new packages was updated source code (minor changes) for my
kernel which is 2.4.19. I compiled and installed that and then rebooted.

My normal GUI, KDE 2, seems to start and run normally up to a point.

If I try to change to a text console using <ctrl><alt><Fn> the whole
machine freezes. Absolutely nothing works after that. I have the magic
sysrq key option in the kernel activated but even that did nothing.
Only a hard reset would work.

I tried booting using my previous kernel with the same results so I've
ruled out the new kernel for the time being.

If I try to close X in the normal way the machine locks and if I try to
kill the X server with <ctrl><alt><backspace> the machine locks. If I try
to logout of KDE and return to the KDM login screen the screen goes black
with just the graphical mouse cursor showing and the machine locks at that
point. <ctrl><alt><del> does the same.

The same things happen if I use Icewm so it's not KDE.

I am assuming that this is an X problem.

The new X packages re-created /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 so I restored my
original to no effect. Still just as bad.

I have no idea where, or how, to start looking and some advice is sorely
needed and would be very welcome.

I redirected X output to a file which is included below and the XFree log
is also appended below in case it means anything to anybody. I'm sorry if
it seems rather long.

NOTE: The reference to ATI is an on-board video chip which is not used.
