random crashing of a Debian machine - where to go?

folks,

since i plugged my laptop in at this conference, it has been acting
up. to be more precise, it just randomly hangs or even reboots. there
are no logs on this issue, which is why i am asking here: how do i go
about finding the problem if it's so sporadic (yesterday it crashed
every 6 minutes, now it already runs for an hour or two...) and if
i am sure that there's nothing new with the system.

it's Debian testing, on a custom 2.4.19 kernel with grsecurity 1.9.7
and freeswan 1.98b, atop a Mobile PIII 1200 in a case that says
Latitude C610.

i am going to run memtest86 now. for any other hints i'd be greatly
appreciative!

this site has moved.
we'd tell you where, but then
we'd have to delete you.
