SORTED !!!!

The system could not find a driver for hdc, my cdrom drive ...

modprobe -l said it could not find the modules.dep file, its search path was 
for an older kernel !!! - wierd

I finaly twigged that the kernal modprobe was looking for was my old red hat 
kernel that used to be on this partition

Bing !! light goes on ... LILO which calls debian still called the old 
vmlinuz, now wonder the poor system went wobbly

You got me from stumped to thinking ..

PS have another problem now with XF86config-4, will post new query
