You need to create the file /etc/apt/preferences looking something
like this:

-------
Package: *
Pin: release a=woody
Pin-Priority: 900

Package: *
Pin: release o=Debian
Pin-Priority: -10
-------

I got nice results from my Radeon by installing X 4.2 (Debian package)
and then installing, on top of that, the radeon packages from the DRI
project at Sourceforge. They supply binary drivers for the radeon
(nightly builds) which are absurdly easy to install (and uninstall
when it's time to upgrade):

		     http://dri.sourceforge.net/

The package (at the moment) is:

		  radeon-20021022-linux-i386.tar.bz2

The risk here, of course, is that installing these takes you outside
the Debian package-manager's knowledge-base.
