Use the "radeon" driver. I had problems when using "ati" as driver, but
I was less lucky. It just froze my system completely.

Try again ;-)
Anyway, look through the log and see if you can find anything about
version mismatches. The DRI drivers, especially the radeon ones, are
hardcoded to the kernel DRM driver version and will complain if there's
a mismatch. If you installed from their daily releases, this should
have been updated automatically (replacing the radeon.o module).

Similar situation here, but the card is so good in terms of 2D quality
that I'm not too likely to switch to anything with decent 3D support
(nvidia) anytime soon.
