oh frankly, i did not know what does 'smarthost' mean. still took a chance and said yes to it. my smarthost is ip address of nt server.
my entry in /etc/exim/exim.conf is: ###################################################################### # ROUTERS CONFIGURATION # # Specifies how remote addresses are handled # ###################################################################### # ORDER DOES MATTER # # A remote address is passed to each in turn until it is accepted. # ###################################################################### # Remote addresses are those with a domain that does not match any item # in the "local_domains" setting above. # Send all mail to a smarthost smarthost: driver = domainlist transport = remote_smtp route_list = "* 192.168.100.1 bydns_a" endlooks similar to yours. except that i have an ip adderss where you had server name. should i put my machine's ip address as smarthost?

well, nt server is our local lan server. i am told they use some merak mail server. but as i said, i will like to send outgoing mail directly from my machine and *not* depend on the server.
thanx again - sandip
