I think your subject line should be "display manager fails to start at
login" since it is not clear if it runs at all.
Try
/etc/init.d/gdm start
/etc/init.d/kdm start
/etc/init.d/xdm start
in any order your care to and see what happens. That would be the
display manager. startx would drop you in an xsession. Or am I
hopelessley confused?
