What services are using these ports?

I am trying to set up a linux server on the college campus that I
attend. This will be, so far as I am aware, the only non Windows
machine on campus. The campus sysadmin has security issues before she
will allow access to the server through the firewall. I used tasksel
when I set the machine up to install the "Standard UNIX Server." This
got me such things as ftp, ftpd, telnet and telnetd. These are all for
the good. It also set up finger and fingerd, not so good; and talk,
ytalk and talkd. I have uninstalled and purged the congiurations for
the finger and talk series of services. This is probably enough to
eventually make the sysadmin happy, but there are a number of ports
which are active that we are not sure what is listening to them. Below
is a list of ports (from before I did my deletes) and what the
sysadmin's resources say they are:

	Port	Service Comments
	----	----------------	--------------------------------
	   9	discard What is this?
	  13	daytime What is this?
	  21	ftp OK
	  22	unassigned Is this talkd?
	  23	telnet OK
25	smtp I dont have smtpd running and do
not plan to set up a mail server.
					Is this exim listening here?
	  37	time This should stay?
79	finger This is gone, already.
111	sun RPC portmapper? Do I need this?
	 113	authentication What is this?
515	printer No printer currently attatched,
					but not a problem.

Any help determining what is active at these ports and how to disable
any un-needed services would be appreciated.
