Oh, okay.  If the only advantage to GRUB is not having to re-run it after a kernel upgrade, I don't mind that much -- I'm really worried about accidentally writing over my Windows disk (/dev/sda), so I don't want to mess with it.  I don't have a backup of what's on it, and can't make a backup at this time (way too much legacy junk).

I'll apt-get install lilo and then run it as root.  Thanks David.
