The libraries are needed for applications that haven't been recompiled for GNOME2 - don't try to remove them. rc indicates that apt _r_emoved the packages, but the _c_onfiguration files are still present (i.e., it has not been purged) - harmless, and uses very little disk space. Also makes it easy to revert if you decide you don't like the new set-up. I would recommend leaving it this way, and if you eventually decide you're happy with GNOME2, and don't want to revert, you can dpkg -P those rc packages. The text change is a normal side effect (^8.
