Hmmm....an xterm will take more resources I believe, since on the
console you just run bash. On the other hand, when you start multiple
xterms they all share the text segment, just like all the bash
processes. 

So the final answer would probably be: the xterm probably takes more
memory and CPU to run, but the difference is marginal as you have a
lot of instances open (unless you are very resource constrained).

Personally, I use as many xterm sessions as I need, unless I need an
extended root session which is usually at a console screen.
