Good points. If you hadn't mentioned it here, I would not likely have given
much thought to the situation. Seems like there must be some non-amateur GPS
software out there. I would even look into possible GPS/Amateur radio apps.
I doubt you need the radio side, but perhaps the GPS side could be worth
while.
Then again, how open are maps? I have only tinkered lightly with GPS's and
data ports to run APRS mobile. Must see about getting a cheap GPS one of
these days :) Pass along what you learn, this could turn into something very
interesting.
