Xwindows Won't start sorry for reposting large e-mail.
I've installed the latest version of Debian on a Dell XPS T500 with
128mb of ram, a Diamond viper d770 ultra video card with 32 mb of
memory, and a usb mouse. During the installation I selected the 2.4
kernel (df2) . I also selected the hid and core usb driver moduals to be
compiled into the kernel. Installation of the base system proceeds well,
I believe, no errors. After I reboot from the bootable floppy I made and
select the programs I want added the installation proceeds and ends with
the message that some of the packages could not be installed properly.
When I reboot the system the screen flashes three or four times and I'm
left at the command prompt. If I try to start X after that the screen
flashes again and I get a message about X not being configured properly
and I'm prompted to set it up again after veiwing a log of the fail
start attempt. At this point I believe tvwm starts up and it let's me
configure the monitor video card keyboard and mouse, the cursor is moved
using the numeric keys on the keyboard. For what ever reason any changes
I make are not saved and when X-windows restarts I get the same message
about it not being configured properly.
I thought the problem might be the fact that my usb logitech usb marble
track ball was not being recognized during the x-windows configuration.
After reading a few posts on usb pointers I went to
www.linux-usb.org/USB-Guide/x194.html and tried changing my XF86Config
file as directed. That didn't seem to help. I did notice something
curious, I checked to see if /dev/input/mice was created and it was.
However when I tried to open the file using emacs I recieved the message
/dev/input/mice exists but can not be opened. When I tried chnod
/dev/input/mice c 13 63 as directed the response was file cannot be over
written.
Previously I had Mandrake-linux 8.1 installed on this machine and it ran
fine. The only differences between the installations are booting from a
floppy and the usb mouse . Could the fact that I'm having to boot from a
floppy have anything to do with the problem I'm having. Also is there a
log that I can view that would show exactly which packages weren't
installed properly during installation? If the xserver packages failed
to install properly maybe that's the problem.
