Sounds as if you have recently upgraded the msttcorefonts package.
There was some discussion of this a week or so ago on the list; the way
of using these fonts in Debian has changed - see the archive.

As a quickfix workaround, you can comment out the relevant line in
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and make sure that these lines come before the
others:

FontPath   "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/:unscaled"
FontPath   "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/:unscaled"

This should get your applications working while you sort out the
installation process for the MS fonts.
