shut down any network daemons on the system if you want to
ensure the server is protected from intrustions. also you
may need to physically secure the machine(put it in a locked
cage or secure room or something).
firewall is a good start but having the latest updates and
running a firewall is only 1 step in trying to ensure the
system is protected from any intrusions.
