Ah, that was it.  Thanks.  I've had issues with installs that haven't
had xbase-clients installed on them before.

So after I got that all installed, I tried getting X going on this
machine so I installed the xserver-svga or whatever it is, but it
appears that X has now depreciated from 4.x back down to 3.x.  It's no
longer looking for /etc/X11/XF86Config-4, but rather at
/etc/X11/XF86Config and the syntax in the two aren't compatible.
