but the hda lost interrupt would tell me its either a driver or
a hardware issue, most likely hardware ..

Abit BP6 has a history of bad problems(I was the unfortunate owner
of one for over a year and spent that year trying to make it stable
some revs are bad others are not so bad), though I am not certain of any
specific problems related to the IDE controller.  If your using the
highpoint controller I would reccomend you switch to the onboard intel
controller instead.
