RE: Why mailing-lists? Usenet have been invented, I hear. ;-)

You(and others) are welcome to go to a company such as linuxcare and
purchase support just like any commercial product if you like.

it seems many give up without even trying, like the previous poster,
who claims he had already given up and left the list. I do not think
what I, or anyone else said is rude. that is very calm. People that
do not put any effort into something are likely not to get handheld
through something. Everyone, EVERYONE was a linux newbie at one
point. I struggled for years when I first started using slackware,
I spent weeks trying to get X to run and ended up buying AcceleratedX.
>From 1996 to 1998 I don't think I was ever even on a mailing list,
I figured everything out for myself, even if it took a month to do.
(I wasn't aware of any mailing list or I would of joined up at the
time)

If someone is not serious about using linux they should not be
using debian. Debian's strengths IMO lie mostly for the more advanced
users. Because of this I have my sister and mother using SuSE instead
of Debian.

If someone is willing to put an effort into using the system, a REAL
effort many people will try to help. But hand holding for a paper MCSE
is not going to be a common experience from a free support group,
most of us have fulltime jobs and/or school(or both) and just do not
have the time to do such basic support.

some people seem to expect WAY too much from a community that tries
to support itself. I recently got(IMO) reamed pretty good on the postfix
mailing list for asking a couple of stupid questions(to the responders,
not to me though). I took it though, because I know how they feel.

as someone who has participated in this mailing list for over 4 years
I must say the responses this poster got are very mild.

I for one greatly value the level of knowledge that flows from this
list, of all of the lists I have participated in over the years the
debian-user list has some of the most accurate, helpful responses of
them all.

I don't put much stock in people that say "I used linux for a month
and it sucks". I would put more stock if they use it for 2-3 years.
I was shafted by Microsoft for nearly a decade before I jumped ship.

(have personally converted many many to linux, and even to debian,
though none of them use any mailing lists)
