i have the very same system, but i never shut the computer down... but
icewm has in conf file value for it. you can use sudo then and use it.

# Command to shutdown the system
# ShutdownCommand="shutdown -h now"

# Command to reboot the system
# RebootCommand="shutdown -r now"

then on ctrl-alt-del there is menu for logout, shutdown etc.
