I believe this is a conflict with gnome-session. In earlier versions of openoffice, they resolved this crashing problem, but I would see a message printed on the terminal that said something to the effect that they were disabling something in the gnome-session.
I haven't filed a bug; I assumed they were aware of it. If you are not running gnome, it may be something else
