Try running "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86" and try different resolutions, etc. You might try VGA (or whatever the generic driver is named) instead of "nv", just to start making progress. You might try different monitor settings (careful tho', that you don't overdrive your monitor). Etc.
