Seems like the setups are rather different, but the reasoning is flawed. 
Also in my case the connection 'should not go through the internet', but...
Like I said, I don't know how to fix it, but I do know that everything I 
have been told to do, I have done, and it is still slow when I have the 
possibility of internet access. When I have the possibility of internet
access, the logon procedure seems to block until something has been checked
on the internet. 

I've made enough dumb mistakes in my time to believe that I am doing something
stupid, but now I see someone else having a similar problem. I really want to
find out how Bob fixes his version of the problem. 

Also, candidate explanations should work for both setups.
