I suppose it depends on what kind of mail notification you want. I'm
using procmail recipes to play sounds on arriving mail, which makes it
pretty independent of where the mail finally ends up.

I don't use any of the various existing mail notification programs /
applets, but if they can be configured to watch any user-specified file,
then procmail may be used to touch that file when it delivers new mail.
