I honestly think this boch thing is misguided efforts and if you want
to try Linux without touching hard disk, there is better way these days.
http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/ seems popular thing to do (I never used
it yet)

FACT: 
You do not need to write MBR nor boot sectors to install Linux on a PC.
Just running Linux without touching Harddisk is even possible.

If you have empty partitions, it is easier to install Linux.  Just boot
with boot FD/CD with boot parameter "rescue root=/dev/hda6" or
something.

I can assure you that you can do great harm to system even if you keep
off MBR and boot sectors.  So be careful if this machine is mission
critical.  I would not even trust FIPS etc.
