NIC interface config at boot

I'm having a problem, several cousins of which have appeared in the list
lately.

I upgraded testing/unstable on 2.2.19pre17 yesterday and now "ifup" no
longer configures eth0 at boot. (lo is OK).

After boot,

# /etc/init.d/networking stop
# /etc/init.d/networking start

works fine.

During boot several messages regarding "configuring network interfaces"
flash by, like "SCIOCSIFADDR: no such device", and "SCIOCSIFNETMASK: no
such device".

Anyone with diagnostics?

man interfaces mentions a "mapping" stanza. What is the syntax on the
scripts? Is this a way to set up for several locations? Didn't I see a
package that did that?

Thanks.

Mark
