Your console doesn't habe 640x480 nor 800x600 :) You're currently running at 80x25. You can extend it to 80x50. This extended video mode needs to be supported by your kernel i.e. console->video selection mode has to be checked when you compiled your kernel. The next step is to modify your lilo.conf. There is a line in it that says vga=normal, change it to vga=ask or vga=extended, re-run lilo as root and be happy with your hi-resolution console :) So that's it but while reading your post it feels like your an rookie and didn't compile a kernel by your own. If so I advice you to go to the bookstore of your trust and buy a good guide to Linux.
