LPRng and ifhp trouble.

I have a Brother HL-720 connected to /dev/lp0. So far so good--I can
use ghostscript with the hl7x0 driver to produce a file which turns
into nice hardcopy when I cat it to /dev/lp0.

However, I'm having trouble configuring LPRng and ifhp to cope with
the situation. I've never had to deal with any Unix printer
configuration before, but after looking over the docs I cam up with
the following (comments removed) for /etc/printcap :

.common:
   :sd=/var/spool/lpd/%P
   :sh:mx=0:mc=0

lp:lp=/dev/lp0
  :tc=.common
  :force_local
  :ifhp=model=gs_hl7x0
  :filter=/usr/lib/ifhp/ifhp

I haven't touched /etc/ifhp.conf; according to the docs this should
not be necessary, and the file format does not seem to be well
documented either.

Unfortunately, this just doesn't work. The greatest response I can
get from the printer is to make the alarm light flash. ;-)

lpq -L produces this:

 Filter_status: using model 'gs_hl7x0' at 03:20:06.709
Filter_status: setting up printer at 03:20:06.724

If I change /dev/lp0 to some temporary file, then I see that ifhp does
not seem to change what goes through to the printer at all: whether
it's postscript or plain text, it just goes through without any
massaging.

Any ideas?
