Perhaps your XF86Config-4 is not correctly pointing to the font
server. My XF86Config-4 contains:

Section "Files"
    FontPath   "unix/:7100"
    FontPath   "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/"
EndSection

7100 is the default port for xfs so I have no explicit option for this
in /etc/X11/fs/config
