Which reminds me:  At one stage of my struggles I did achieve 
something with

apt-get install xfonts-base

I found that I only had some "transcribed" versions of the 
fonts installed.  I don't know what they are - I think I 
was conned into using them by dselect but I'm not sure.

And by the way, I've been using fvwm(2) for a year or two 
on potato and slink.
