I figured it out after much trial and error.  I created my own startup
script called 'wlanscript' and placed this single line into it:
"/etc/init.d/wlan start".  This starts the driver up.

Then I just made sure this script was called before the init.d/networking
script by putting 'S39wlanscript' symbolic link into the rcS.d directory.

I don't know if this is the best way of doing it but it works.

If I needed to, how could I obtain a copy of the bootup messages?  They go
by so fast during bootup.
