movie library

I am looking for a good C/C++ library for creating and manipulating moving pictures.

I need to create an animated movie based on a set of scientific data. No shadling and 3D modeling here, just lots of rectangles, ellipses, and such moving around.

If it works together with gd, essentially allowing me to take a series of gd pictures and save them as a movie, that would be great. Loading each frame from a file in some standard format would also be fine.

If it can save movies as .mpg's, that would be great. But as long as it can save in some format that Quick Time Pro can open, I can use that to convert. (Seperate question: is there an open-source alternative to QT Pro?)

Bonus points if there is a Perl module for the library.
