woody: blank screen/crash on X

hi,

I tried to configure X 4.x with debconf (dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86),
xf86config and xf86cfg. xf86cfg does not start up (black screen).

I am using gdm and at bootup X starts but I get only a black screen.
I can't switch to the console (Alt+Fx), I can only get out of there
by doing a soft reboot.

This is the hardware:

Diamond Viper 330
chipset: Nvidia Riva 128
Driver: nv (this is also what xf86config's database suggests)
memory: 4Mb
I am using a 14" Monitor. This hardware worked fine with Xfree86 3.x
on potato.
