The cleanest solution is to use a local network (even if it only
consists of one host). The range 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.255.255, among
others, is reserved for local use.

It's simpler if you have other hosts, since then it makes sense that you
have to have a separate IP address for eth0, and you can start running
things on that address. If you only have one machine, just use
127.0.0.1.

The FQDN doesn't have to be real; it just has to be something nobody
else will use (since you run into problems with news article propagation
if that happens). You could try a dynamic DNS provider, like Paul, or
you could construct something unique yourself.
