kdm lpp(linux progress patch) conflict

I put in the linux progress patch and it worked fine. Kdm worked fine. Then
as usual I dinked with it. I decided to try a different boot screen in lpp.
It blew my kernel compile. I looked at what was going in the install script
and found it modified 3 files in the kernel source. Then I looked at them and
they contained a different set of pramas than the original. I restored these
3 files to what I thought was the original working lpp. Then the kernel built
and kdm quit on boot.
The three kernel files are:
fbcon.c
fbprogress.h
fbprogress.c
The file /var/log/daemon contains:
Jul 26 02:25:50 localhost kdm[938]: Cannot write to helper
Jul 26 02:25:50 localhost kdm[938]: Unable to read configuration for display
:0; stopping it.
Every time kdm fails to start under the lpp. The lpp /etc/init.d/rc and
/etc/init.d/rcS where put in and removed and this had no effect.
Any ideas where to look to fix this interesting behavior.
If I start kdm manually later it works fine.
Shawn
