It depends on the kernel compile options and your BIOS settings.
Assuming that you havn't touched your BIOS, which kernel did you install?

Install the kernel sources for the kernel you are using and then check
under power management in General Settings what APM or ACPI is set up
as.

Correct the problem, recompile and install.
