Do not do this!  (For security, run X as user)

to gain root priv.  (I hope other sections especially chapter 6 of
Debian Reference should be good for you.)

 From any xterm,

$ su -c "shutdown -h now"

Or set /etc/inittab with
---
# What to do when CTRL-ALT-DEL is pressed.
#ca:12345:ctrlaltdel:/sbin/shutdown -t1 -a -r now
ca:12345:ctrlaltdel:/sbin/shutdown -t1 -a -h now
---
and press TRL-ALT-DEL :)
