kernel 2.4 orinoco gold card problems

howdy...

i recently bought a pair of orinoco gold wireless pcmcia network cards,
one for my laptop and one for a desktop (the base station). the laptop
is a thinkpad 600e and the desktop is a mongrel pc with a tyan trinity
kt-a motherboard and an orinico pci->cardbus bridge. both machines are
running testing.

i'm using:

	pcmcia-cs	3.1.33-6
	pcmcia-source	3.1.33-6
	wireless-tools	24-1
	kernel		2.4.18 (on the laptop)
			2.4.19-rc2-ac2 (on the desktop, but i've also
			tried 2.4.18 with identical results)

so far, i've been using the modules from pcmcia-source, not the 2.4
in-kernel pcmcia support.

the problem is with the desktop machine. initially, i had resource
allocation problems with the cardbus bridge, but i was able to play
bios and card swapping games until pcmcia-cs quit complaining about
no available high memory. now, when i insert the card or boot with it
inserted, the wireless card is recognized, but iwconfig won't play ball
with it:

	logos:~ ] iwconfig eth1
	eth1      no wireless extensions.

this is the entire wireless.opts which i'm playing with:

	logos:~ ] cat /etc/pcmcia/wireless.opts
	case "$ADDRESS" in
	*,*,*,*)
	    ESSID="BOGUS"
	    MODE="Ad-Hoc"
	    ;;
	esac

when i use the identical wireless.opts on the laptop, iwconfig is
able to set and questy the essid and mode and other parameters.

here's the relevant logs from the desktop:
