In my experience, the kernel drivers don't work for all cards that the
linux-wlan drivers do. I have a USR Robotics Wireless card which seems
to use the prism2 chip; I couldn't get it to work with the latest
kernel drivers but had absolutely no problem getting the wlan-ng
drivers up and running--perhaps this is just something I missed myself
but I found the wlan-ng system to easier and better.

I will share anything about my set-up I can and am willing to help you
out to get this working. Id love to see this in Debian.
