I use the old fashion was of building my kernels (I don't make a deb package).

I have compiled a 2.4 kernel on 2 prior occasions and they booted fine.
I used the exact same procedure I used to make a 2.2 kernel.


I have never toyed with an initrd when compiling 2.4 in the past...

As described on the page:

     # cd /usr/src
     # tar xfvz linux-whatever.tar.gz
     # rm -rf linux
     # ln -s linux-whatever linux
     # cd linux
     # make menuconfig
     ... configure stuff ...

I presume you rechecked your configuration to make sure you had chosen the exact architecture. I didn't see the choice I had made which as I said gave at least two of us your exact failure.
