Beware: I would not read much into this for the following reason:
The Geforce4 440MX is closer to a Geforce 2 than a Geforce4 Ti4200. The
Geforce4 MX's should never have been called Geforce4's: they are really
Geforce2 technology with a new memory interface.

Therefore I would really not let this report put you off getting a
Geforce4 Ti4200: you shouldn't have any problems with the Ti4200 (or
higher).

Adam, have you tried appending vga=ask to your boot line and then trying
to select different modes? It may be that the drivers/card simply don't
like certain modes. It's odd though that changing the drivers should
have this affect: on my TNT2 M64 here, the drivers don't get loaded
*until* I start up X. Or are you saying that console is fine until you
start X, and after that you can't get back to a real console?

You could exit X, and then type (blindly, as root) 'rmmod nvidia'. That
may help (or may not!).
