That's not in the least ominous, it's perfectly normal.

Have you perhaps upgraded to dpkg 1.10 (in which dselect is split off
into a separate package) and then downgraded again, or something like
that?

Anyway, try downloading
ftp://ftp.debian.org/ftp/pool/main/d/dpkg/dpkg_1.9.21_i386.deb and
running 'dpkg -i dpkg_1.9.21_i386.deb'. Reinstalling the package should
sort it out.
