i don't think i understand what you mean with this. i want to know
whether an interface like ppp0 is not only up but actually linked to
the upstream router. one seems to be unable to see that difference
with OS tools.


Why don't you just ping the upstream router? Something like "if (ping router.isp -c 4); then ... ;fi"
