finding status of pppd in demand mode

hi folks,

if pppd is configured in demand mode, the actual link status is not
reflected in /proc/net/route (/sbin/route) or /proc/net/dev
(/sbin/ifconfig). pinging a host on the outside is not a good way to
query the status for obvious reasons, so i am wondering if you know of
a way to query a running on-demand pppd for its link status.
