At least when using XFree86 version 4.x, there is a switch
"-configure" that creates a default setting which usually get's you
going. It surely isn't perfect, but it should be a good starting point.
But of course you are right if you point out that there is no substitute
for doing a little research.

Besides, there usually is a handbook being shipped with each monitor that
(usually) contains a section named "Technical Specifications" (or
something simliar) which also provides details on the subject.
