Subject: Errors were encountered while processing: base-config

Karun,
In order to work around the Deb 3.0 looping problem after
installing the base system, I followed yours and Ian's (archived) advice
in downloading and copying

http://ftp.au.debian.org/pub/debian/pool/main/b/base-config/base-config_
1.33.18_all.deb

to floppy via XP where I renamed it 'base-config.deb'.
I rebooted and went into virtual terminal 2: I noticed that
I could login as root, but not under my username.
As root, I performed

mount /dev/fd0 /mnt
dpkg -i /mnt/base-config.deb

after which I received the following messages:
-----------------------------------------------------------
(Reading database . 6063 files and dictionaries currently installed.)
Preparing to replace base-config 1.33.17 (using /mnt/base-config.deb).
Unpacking replacement base-config.
Setting up base config (1.33.18) .

debconf: DbDriver "configdb" error: /var/cache/debconf/config.dat is
locked by another process dpkg: error processing base-config (--install)

Subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
 base-config
-----------------------------------------------------------

What do I do next ?
