stable kernel

Woody users a 2.2 kernel, same as Potato.
Why does it not use a 2.4.18 for example? It is a new and better one if
i believe the anouncements of kernel.org.

Some people say there is no stable kernel since 2.2.x, is this right?

We have problems with some servers running a 2.4.14. They crash
sometimes so that there is no communication possible, neither over
network nor over the terminal. We have to switch them off and trun them
on. Then thy work normal untill the next crash comes.

Can somebody help me?
