I don't find it slow; but I have a PostScript printer.

Does the kernel have the lp module loaded?

On kernel 2.2 and above, the first parallel port should always be
/dev/lp0.  You should be able to do

cat /etc/group >/dev/lp0

If not, parallel printing is not supported by the kernel.
