Check out phpgroupware version 0.9.14
 (use apt or goto www.phpgroupware.org )
and use the "AngleMail" email upgrade
 ( www.anglemail.org ).

* phpgroupware *can* be huge but all you need are:
phpgwapi
addressbook
calendar
email (which you will replace later)
preferences
admin

(I'm going by memory, I hope that's correct)

Then replace the email directory with the anglemail upgrade.

disclaimer: I'm the "angles" in AngleMail, however others have found it works
well, some use it in production.
