                                                           ^---------------^
                                         Eventually, you may want to try:
                                         apt-get dist-upgrade

                                                 Fix this with:
                                                 apt-get update
                                                 apt-get install apt-utils

check /root/.profile to make sure the PATH definition includes the
above directories. /root/.profile should include two lines like:

PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/bin/X11
export PATH
