cron - permission denied (and other problems)

Due to a recent crash, some of my configuration files got screwed up. I
managed to fix most of it, but I still have a couple of problems.

The biggest problem is that cron refuses to work now. Whenever it tries
to do something, I get entries like this in my auth.log:

Jul 3 15:08:01 labatt cron(pam_unix)[27681]: session opened for user mail by (uid=0)
Jul 3 15:08:01 labatt CRON[27681]: Permission denied

I tried reinstalling cron, pam, and a bunch of other base packages, but
no luck. /etc/pam.d/cron looks normal (I have an old backup, and it's
the same). Of course, the most annoying thing about the logs is that it
doesn't tell me what the "Permission denied" refers to. I d/l'ed the
cron sources, but can't find anything that might generate that.

- any ideas what might be wrong?
- suggestions on how to find out what "Permission denied" means?

The other problem is that when GDM2 starts automatically on bootup from
the init scripts, X won't recognize any keystrokes. Not even
Ctrl-Alt-F1. If I make it so that GDM2 doesn't start automatically, but
I start it manually, everything works fine.

Any help appreciated. Otherwise, I'll just have to blow away my system
partition and reinstall.

P.S. How can I find out what conf files a package includes? i.e. I can
find out what files it has by dpkg -L, but which of those are conf
files? I know I found that information somewhere before.
